A Successful WBL Partnership with Cascades Job Corps Leads To Student Employment Opportunities

Who knew that a demonstration to students in the Cement Masonry program on floor polishing in 2009 would lead Kyle Wiggins of Flooring Solutions, LLC to become Cascades 2011 Community Supporter of the Year.  “I’ve enjoyed working with the students and we plan to continue to do so in the future.” stated Kyle Wiggins, President.

Although the ten students who have done Work Based Learning with Flooring Solutions have worked primarily on concrete polishing and surface preparation, the company based out of Woodinville, WA also does concrete restoration, decorative concrete, flooring removal, and flooring systems.  They have over fifteen years of experience in the decorative concrete industry.

Kyle not only pays our WBL students an average of $13 per hour, he also has offered six students employment.  Three accepted, two declined to return to their homes in other parts of the state, and one entered the military.  “I look for individuals who are motivated, have a good attitude, get along well with others, are reliable, and most of all are willing to learn.”  He feels that Job Corps offers him students with a lot of potential.  “I hope to be at 50% hiring from WBL students soon.”

Kyle feels that “The great thing about this country is that it allows you to do anything you want if you are motivated and hard working.”  Kyle grew up in a construction family.  His father designed and manufactured machinery that changed the flooring industry.  Kyle said that he knew pretty quickly that he wanted to be hands on instead of working only in sales and promotions.

The Flooring Solutions team has gone beyond expectations when working the Cascades Job Corps students.  They have willingly picked them up and returned them to center so that they would have opportunities to work that would normally have been outside our transportation area.  They work closely with our students to increase their skills and knowledge in the use of specialized equipment and techniques.  The feedback they give students is beneficial in building good employability skills.  The team encourages the students to watch, learn, and ask questions.

Congratulations Kyle Wiggins and the Flooring Solutions, LLC team on earning the “Community Supporter of the Year” Award.  We look forward to a long and mutually beneficial relationship with you.
