A Day of Silence At Cascades

A Day of Silence At Cascades

The Day of Silence was celebrated at Cascades Job Corps on April 15th, as a part of a nation-wide program in schools and colleges focused on ending bullying and harassment, particularly physical violence and verbal threats.
This day is about bringing attention to a group of people whose voices are many times silent, becoming more aware of why and having the opportunity to advocate for their safety.  The silence is based on real feelings and experiences—things like past/present bullying or harassment, fears of losing relationships, jobs, family, church, community, or because they feel that they will not be heard.   The belief is that ending the silence is the first step toward fighting these injustices.
This year, 64 students signed up to be silent, another 40 for support, and more than 50 support badges were taken by staff! People who participated did so for themselves, for friends, family, or because they wanted to make a difference.  People who participated were in no way labeling their sexual orientation—they were standing up against injustice for ALL people.
