Carville Job Corps Center -High School Diploma Programs visited the New Orleans Museum of ART on February 24, 2011.  They were eager and excited to see the art they were studying in their Art Appreciation Study Guide on display at the museum. The students were greeted at the door of the museum by guide Ms. Joel, retired educator who was quite knowledgeable of Art.  The students expressed to Ms. Joel what they had studied and their interest in CHINA due to their prior cultural studies.  So Ms. Joel started the tour in the Chinese Gallery.  The students were totally amazed by the giant sculpture of BUDDHA and the porcelain vases of CHINA, along with the calligraphy on display.  Ms. Joel saw the interested faces and began to tell stories about the pieces of Art, including the story of the binding of the Chinese girls’ feet, to keep their feet very small.  The students also exchanged stories they had read in Cultural Studies of China.  Student employees also view oil and watercolors and a few of PICASSO, RODIN as Ms. Joel gave explanations of several pieces. The furniture in the rooms was interesting to the students to see how different cultures furnish their homes.   The students were taken on a tour of the sculpture gardens viewing the interesting pieces of sculptures along the cool and refreshing walkways.  The students and staff later retired to the café’ for ice cream and to the lovely picnic areas of New Orleans City Park to enjoy lunch.
