The Carville High School Diploma students visited Old City Hall Museum

The Carville High School Diploma students visited Old City Hall Museum in Denham Springs, LA with their instructor, Mrs. Evelina Jones.   The students visited the Old Town Hall Museum in Denham Springs, LA to view the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition which is on loan to the city for a short time in September and October.  The students viewed the pictures on the screens and played the tapes that accompanied the pictures.  It told stories of the migration of settlers, their lifestyles and modes of transportation across the United States in search of a home.   Livingston Parish’s “Journey Stories” was also on display showing photos, with stories, tales and genealogies telling how people from east European ancestors came to Livingston Parish   and survived working in the sawmills and growing strawberries.  The students were amazed at the beautiful costumes that were on display that the Hungarians wore in their native countries and even today when they celebrate during the strawberry festival in Albany, LA.  The delicate and intricate Hungarian needlework was lovely.  The students also saw their handmade instrument to make music.  These people were looking for an opportunity to have a better living and found it in Livingston Parish.  Most of the immigrants in Livingston Parish during the migration were Catholic and there are still Catholic churches in the area.  But in the south, which is referred to the Bible area, there are presently many Baptist churches in Denham Springs.  The students really enjoyed seeing the old jail that was at one time housed in the Old City Hall which was on the 2nd floor of the building.  Denham Springs is loaded with history of migration and we were privileged to see some of it through the exhibition.
