Perkins Office Administration student Shelby Wagenaar began working the front lines during pandemic on April 17.
Wagenaar never thought in her position as receptionist at Dolphin Pointe Healthcare facility she’d receive the honor of meeting, greeting and taking the temperature of Florida’s 46th Governor Ron DeSantis. Dolphin Pointe Healthcare is Jacksonville’s premier, private room, skilled nursing facility and health care rehab center. Wagenaar welcomes, screens, provides Personal Protective Equipment for all visitors, taking and transferring incoming calls, managing packages and applications, and ensuring the health and welfare of those who enter the facility. Her decision to work at a healthcare facility was fueled, in part, by the fact that her grandfather became ill and was hospitalized in early April. “I don’t want my parents or grandparents to contract the COVID-19 virus, so I’m doing all I can to prevent it for others.” Shelby explained during her May 1 publication. Since then we are sadden to say Shelby lost her grandfather Ovie Willard Hunter on May 4, 2020 to extended illness.
Her Office Administration Instructor, Chuck Adams proclaims “Shelby is an excellent student and caring individual. She is not afraid to step out onto the front lines to aid and care for those who need it. She accepts each challenge and finds ways to overcome them. I am proud to know her as a student and as a person.” Wagenaar continues to serve in her receptionist position at Dolphin Pointe and participates in Office Administration digital learning at Perkins Job Corps.
FL Governor Ron DeSantis said in a Fox News report on May 9, 2020 that Dolphin Pointe Health Care will serve as a transition point for people who have been diagnosed, recovered, and no longer have Covid-19 but may not need to be in a hospital but may not be able to return to their nursing homes.
