In the Wednesday, July 6, 2011 edition of the Floyd County Times, two photographs along with extended captions and articles were published that focused on recent achievements by students at Carl D. Perkins Job Corps Center.
A center-based spelling bee contest held on Tuesday, June 28, resulted in nine students taking first-place prizes to move on to the next round for the grand prize where they will compete against one another. This received coverage with the students highlighed in the newspaper as follows: Jerry Straughan, Cregory Johnson, Antwan Johnson, Mary Ann Franz, Roland Polk, Clinton Kime, Jonathan Jones, Austin Salyer, and Jordan Chapman.
In addition, in the same issue of the that newspaper, an article about the 13 graduates during Perkins’ most recent ceremony were also published. Students included in that same issue were: Dexter Brown, of Orlando, Florida: Security Protection Services; Alberto Carmona, of Daytona Beach, Florida: Carpentry; Christopher Cochran, of St. Augustine, Florida: Office Administration and Culinary Arts; Anthony Demello, of Benwood, West Virginia: Hotel Lodging; Eric Dunn, of Radcliff, Kentucky: Electricity; Corie Ferguson, of Belle Glade, Florida: Security Protection Services; Chanise Gaines, of Miami, Florida: Hotel Lodging; Keymond Gant, of Louisville, Kentucky: Hotel Lodging; Timothy Hamilton, of Banner, Kentucky: HVAC; Biheem Lawsom, of Raleigh, North Carolina: Security Protection Services; Mvuyekure Obedi, of Clarkston, Georgia: Electricity; and Jericka Sluss, of Lowmansville, Kentucky: Security and Protection Services.
