Students join other volunteers to clean lake, shoreline
Carl D. Perkins Job Corps student volunteers have had a busy start to the spring season, working to ensure the Jenny Wiley State Park is ready for visitors. Students, under the supervision of CORE Instructor Harold Auxier and Facilities Maintenance Instructor Ricky Yates, spent the week of March 19th out on boats and walking the miles of lake shore to clean up trash. The students and other volunteers collected more than 20 tons of trash which washed into the lake and onto the shoreline after the area was inundated with flooding.
The Carpentry and Facilities Maintenance students also helped with some repairs to the campground area during the week.
Their volunteer effort helped ready the park for the million visitors who each year enjoy the beautiful lake, hiking, biking, horse trails and campgrounds of the Jenny Wiley State Park.
This clean-up effort is just one of many projects Carl D. Perkins Job Corps students do throughout the year to give back to the community while getting the valuable hands-on work experience they need as they prepare for their new careers.
