Carl D. Perkins receives grant from Mountain Regional Prevention Center

On Tuesday, June 30th Carl D. Perkins Job Corps Youth to Youth (Y2Y) leadership group received a $1,500 grant from the Mountain Regional Prevention Center (MRPC) to combat the use of tobacco, alcohol and other drug use in our community. The MRPC challenged the Y2Y leadership group to use critical thinking skills, to explore strategies, and create a plan to track their progress and success of implemented ideas back in early February of this year.
One specific idea targeted the use of tobacco on center. Upon students’ return to center, Y2Y students will be constructing game tables during breaks in the training day where students can win prizes for participation in an effort to deter youth smoking. Other ideas for prevention from Y2Y include hosting art campaigns, pledge signings to remain drug free, hosting candlelight vigils for those lost and still suffering, celebrations for those who have recovered, and creating a documentary to outreach into the local area schools and community related functions and events.
“We are beyond excited to receive this honor, and we would like to thank the ladies at MRPC for investing in our youth. Their ideas are really innovative, and I am so proud to be a part of a team who truly care about making an impact in our community and society as a whole.” Exclaims Y2Y Adult Mentor and Business Community Liaison, Tiffany Fannin.
