Carl D. Perkins Job Corps Students Advance to Regional Academic and Career Skills Competition After Win in Bristol

Students from the Carl D. Perkins Job Corps Center traveled to Bristol, TN, to take part in the Region II Job Corps Academic and Career Skills Competition and returned to the Prestonsburg Center on Friday, Aug. 27 as District Champions. The team will now have the opportunity to travel to Ocean City, MD, in October to defend their title as Region II Champions.

The structure of the competition begins at each Job Corps Center, where a team of six contestants is formed. Each center team then attends a district competition at a host center. Winners from each district competition advance to the National competition in Ocean City, MD, on Oct. 6, 2010.

Contest questions are ‘short answer’ and cover the subject areas of language arts, social studies, science, spelling and mathematics. Students are assigned to specific subjects and compete against other centers that are in their district. The Perkins Team went up against strong competition from other district centers Earle C. Clements, Great Onyx, Blue Ridge and Frenchburg but was able to secure the title of District Champs.

The Carl D. Perkins Academic Team and their chosen category are: Team Captain Dustin Meadows, Math; Nina Stone, Language Arts; Jacob Gardner, Social Studies; Quisto Ortiz, Science; Matthew Jacobsohn, Spelling; and alternate David Guest, current events.
