On June the 12th & 13th, the Carl D. Perkins Job Corps Security & Protective Service students had the opportunity to do event security for the Fire in the Mountains” event in Pikeville, Ky. If you were a fan of Motors and Music this was the place to be. The students worked the Muscle on main drag races on Friday evening, then returning on Saturday to work the concert featuring Marshall Tucker band making a stop in Pikeville while promoting their “Searching for a Rainbow Tour.” After the event, students had the opportunity to meet the band members.
Security students were extremely excited to work with a high profile event. Students got to put all of their skills learned, such as crowd control, and pre event planning identifying the factors that could affect the crowd, traffic control and crises intervention. The students made such an impression on the company Security Group Services that was working the event, the owner Mary Smith wants to develop a paid Work Based Learning site with center.
Security student Michael Hardin working the event at the stage entrance, stated ” It was amazing, and one of life’s memorable moments.” Events like these shows that the training these students receive at Perkins is preparing them for the world of work.
