The Student Government Association along with Y2Y student ambassadors and staff of the Carl D. Perkins Job Corps Center recently held a center-wide fundraising campaign in honor of giving back to others. The campaign, one of several “Day of Service” projects the center was involved in to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., benefited Judi’s Place for Kids. Students held two Friday Dress down Days, where students and staff paid $1 and donated one of the following items — Clorox wipes, Kleenex or paper towels — for the privilege of dressing casually during the training day. The center raised $170 and collected several cases of supplies for Judi’s Place for Kids
Judi’s Place for Kids is a community working together to promote safety and justice, and offer hope and healing so that all may thrive and reach their full potential. Founded in 1999, Judi’s Place for Kids is named for Kentucky’s Former First Lady Judi Patton to recognize her involvement in the establishment of children’s advocacy centers across Kentucky and particularly the local center formed in Pikeville, her hometown. The center opened in its first home in 2001 and later moved in 2008 in order to better serve children.
Judi’s Place for Kids obtained accreditation from the National Children’s Alliance in 2009, recognizing its adherence to national standards for children’s advocacy centers.
Donations to Judi’s Place for Kids provide essential services in the investigation and treatment of suspected child abuse for nearly 300 children per year from Pike, Floyd, Johnson, Martin, and Magoffin counties in Kentucky.
Carl D. Perkins Job Corps Center is happy to contribute in the mission of Judi’s Place for Kids, and will continue to assist in other projects throughout the year.
