Prestonsburg, KY March 2, 2018. Students from the Carl D. Perkins Job Corps Center held a classroom reading event with students at Porter Elementary on March 2, 2018 to celebrate the National Education Association’s Read Across America Day 2018.
Perkins also held a book drive, and received a nice selection of books that they were able to donate one-hundred age appropriate books to the Porter Elementary Head Start classroom and one-hundred books to used for their after-school program.
The annual Read Across America Day raises awareness of the NEA’s mission to motivate children and teens throughout the country to dedicate more time to reading through events, partnerships, and reading resources.
Job Corps centers nationwide hosted these reading events to emphasize to for their students and their communities that an integral part of building a career is a foundation of strong reading and leadership skills. By participating in the events, Job Corps students had the opportunity to strengthen their reading skills and act as a role model to children in their community.
Ms. Betty Bartlett’s Reading class read to the Porter Elementary Head Start students. They read the book “Shampoodle Pet Salon”. When students finished the book, they worked with the class on making a craft practicing their sounds with cutting out pictures that begin with the letter D.
