Carl D. Perkins Business Community Liaison Discusses The Importance of the Job Corps Program!
Ms. Jimmie Slone Business Community Liaison for the Carl D. Perkins Job Corps, discussed the Job Corps program, with Gov. Steve Beshear, U.S. Congressman Harold “Hal” Rogers and other state and local officials at the Pikeville-Pike County Airport on Nov. 6 for the official launch ceremony for Appalachian Air, a commercial air service that will begin offering daily flights out of Pikeville on March 3, 2014.
Appalachian Air will provide one roundtrip every day of the week between the Pikeville-Pike County Airport (PBX) and the Nashville International Airport (BNA). There, passengers make connecting flights that travel nonstop to 50 major destinations in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.
Center Director Thomas Rainey stated, “The addition of commercial air service in Pikeville, Kentucky would be a blessing to the Carl D. Perkins Job Corps Center. The air service would provide a big convenience to the center with students arriving and departing the center. Currently, the center has to transport students at least an hour and a half away to the nearest airport in comparison to Pikeville, Kentucky which is only 20 minutes from the center. The economic impact of having commercial airline locally will provide great economic impact to the surrounding communities.”
Ms. Slone, will also be attending, the summit, titled “S.O.A.R.: Shaping Our Appalachian Region”, Monday, Dec. 9 at the Eastern Kentucky Exposition Center in Pikeville.
