Tiffany Lewallen was adopted into a family in Newport News, VA. “I had no stability, and I was struggling to figure out what to do with my life,” she explained. The one thing she knew is that she wanted to have a positive impact of the lives of others. Fortunately, she heard about Job Corps, and decided to give it a shot.
“I decided to come to Blue Ridge Job Corps because they had a medical assistant program that I was very interested in, as well as many other medical trades,” Tiffany recalled. Not only did she earn her medical assistant certification, but also earned credentials in EKG, phlebotomy, and patient care technician. She also participated in extracurricular activities, volunteering as a tutor and working with Feeding America.
Since graduating from Blue Ridge, Tiffany also became certified as a CNA. She is currently enrolled in Purdue University’s Sterile Processing program, and she just accepted a sterile processing technician position, which she will start in January.
“My advice for any Job Corps graduates is to apply for any jobs that you’re interested in. Even if you’re not fully qualified yet, may employers will allow you to work and train you for what you’re missing. Ask them if you can shadow their employees. Anything to get your foot in the door.”
