Blue Ridge Job Corps Student Success – Takeisha Wiggins

Takeisha Wiggins
Age: 25
Hometown: Portsmouth, VA
Region: Philadelphia
Center: Blue Ridge
Dates enrolled: 8/26/2014 – 8/28/2015
Training: Clinical Medical Assistant, Phlebotomy Tech., EKG Tech., Patient Care Tech.

When asked about her childhood, Takeisha Wiggins described it as “normal.” She had a loving family who supported her, and she was a great student all through school. In fact, she graduated with a 3.8 GPA, but stated that college was not an option for her due to her financial circumstances. She knew that she would be unable to find the level of employment that she wanted for herself with only a high school diploma, so she started looking for opportunities to expand her education. “I found Blue Ridge Job Corps, and they offered training that I was very interested in,” she said.
Takeisha enrolled at Blue Ridge in August, 2014, and hit the ground running in the Clinical Medical Assistant program. Within a year’s time, she had earned certifications in CMA, as well as phlebotomy, EKG, and patient care technician. She was very active around campus, volunteering as a tutor for her classmates, as well as assisting in security.
Takeisha is back in Portsmouth, and says that she has obtained her “dream job” as a medical assistant at Portsmouth Pediatrics, P.C. She also does some home health part time, and is in the process of applying for nursing programs for Fall 2021.
She knows that anything worth having is worth working for, and wants to pass that message along to current students. “Just remember the reason that you came to Job Corps, and stay focused on achieving you goals,” she advised.
