Shontera Boyd graduated from Westwood High School in Winnsboro, South Carolina in 2015, when she started to speak with her family about her next steps. “My grandmother had worked in the medical field my entire life, and I had always admired her for that,” Shontera said. When she asked her grandmother where she’d gone to school, she responded “Job Corps.” As it turns out, Shontera’s grandmother, Venice McKie, was a 1976 graduate of Breckenridge Job Corps, now known as Earle C. Clements Job Corps Center, in Morganfield, KY. After learning of her grandmother’s Job Corps success, Shontera decided to enroll, and a short time later, she arrived in Marion, VA, ready to pursue her own career in healthcare.
Shontera wasted no time getting to work, and in less than one year, she found herself a Job Corps graduate with certifications in Medical Assistant, Phlebotomy, EKG Tech, and Patient Care Tech. She was able to do all this while still being quite active in campus life, participating in a variety of sports, and volunteering for community service activities often.
Shontera currently works full-time as a medical assistant at Go Health Urgent Care in Charlotte, NC. She also spends part of her time working at an eye surgery center called Miracles in Sight, in Winston-Salem, where her primary role is assisting with the removal of corneas. On top of all that, she is enrolled in nursing classes at Midlands Technical College.
“I want to that all the amazing teachers and staff of Blue Ridge Job Corps,” Shontera stated, “you are forever in my heart!”
