Shakyra Diggs grew up in Newport News, VA, and she attended high school there up until her senior year. Unfortunately, at that time, she left school without graduating. This does not mean that education wasn’t important to her, so she immediately began looking for ways to improve her situation. She found such an opportunity in Job Corps.
The primary draw for coming to Job Corps was the fact that it was a free chance to earn her diploma and add certifications that would set her up for a meaningful career. She made the most of her opportunities by earning certifications in Clinical Medical Assistant, Electronic Health Records, and Medical Administrative Assistant, and of course her high school diploma.
She didn’t stop at Job Corps, but continued her education at ECPI University where she majored in Pharmacy Technician. She now works as Rx Manager at CVS in Newport News, VA, and plans to go even further by earning her bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences.
Shakyra urges current students to get as much out of Job Corps as they possibly can. “The more you have under your belt, the better. Don’t give up, and remember that hard work pays off,” she said.
