Sarah Proffitt came to Blue Ridge Job Corps from her home town of Norfolk, VA. She had graduated from high school, but attending college was financially unattainable for her. In May, 2018 she arrived at Blue Ridge with goals to further her education and to return home with the skills and credentials needed for a successful career.
In addition to working her way through Clinical Medical Assistant, Sarah was also highly involved in extracurricular activities at Blue Ridge. Very skilled in math and reading, she volunteered her talents to work as a tutor in these areas, specifically assisting students learning English as a second language. Sarah also served as President of the Students Government Association, working to give a voice to the student body, and find ways to engage students and make their stay at Blue Ridge as enriching as possible. Sarah also completed an internship at Mel Leaman Free Clinic in Marion, VA to help her gain valuable experience in her career field.
Sarah advised students to remain focused on what they came to accomplish, while still taking opportunities to get involved in the community. “Make a point to regularly volunteer with children or the elderly, as this will help immensely in a job interview,” she stated. Sarah is currently working as a nursing care partner at Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk, VA, and she plans to begin college classes in Fall 2019 to pursue a degree in nursing.
