Kaycee Chapman grew up in the small town of Ashland, VA just outside of Richmond. I was a local volunteer firefighter/EMT until graduating from Patrick Henry High School. She’d always goal a goal of becoming a nurse, so after graduation, she enrolled in the BSN program at Virginia State University, but her college experience is not what she expected. She admits that a lack of discipline led to her failing many classes, and on top of that, the university’s nursing program lost accreditation. Unable to transfer due to her grades, she was out of school and looking for her next opportunity. She discovered Job Corps, and set out for Blue Ridge to get back on track to achieving her goals.
Kaycee’s first step at Blue Ridge Job Corps was completing Medical Office Support, which took her only a few short months. She earned certifications in Medical Administrative Assistant, Electronic Health Records, and Billing & Coding. She worked so hard to complete MOS because she hoped to be have all the requirements complete in order to begin the Advanced Training LPN program, and that is exactly what she did. The next two years were spent in advanced training, but she also made plenty of time participating in community service activities and serving as a member of the Student Government Association.
Shortly before graduation from Job Corps, Kaycee joined the Army National Guard, and completed basic training in the weeks following completion of the program. She has since utilized her training as an LPN in a variety of settings, and is now a travel company based in Omaha, Nebraska called Fusion Medical Staffing. Her current assignment has led her to Iowa City, IA, where she is helping in the fight against COVID-19.
Kaycee has not settled solely on health care, however. She has followed a new passion as she is studying to become a realtor. She also plans to return to school to earn her BSN and ultimately become a nurse practitioner.
“The best advice I can give to anyone who may be reading this is to always remember why you went to Job Corps. At some point, you told yourself that your life had to change and only you can make that happen. Don’t lose sight of the goal.”
