Dalelisha Smith grew up in a very large family, as she was the youngest of 8 children. She was a bright student who made good grades, and she even received a scholarship to attend Eastern Shore Community College in Melfa, VA upon graduating high school. Due to unforeseen circumstances, however, she was unable to finish her degree, and she had to drop out. She heard about Job Corps from a friend, and decided to attend an information session to learn more about the program.
Dalelisha had interest in the medical field, so she chose to come to Blue Ridge Job Corps, which offers a variety of health care certifications. Once she arrived, she admits that she became homesick, as this was the first time she’d every been away from her family and friends. She pushed through, however, on her way to becoming a Medical Administrative Assistant. She also earned certifications in CPR and First Aid, Billing and Coding, and Electronic Health Records.
Outside of her classes, Dalelisha was a member of the Student Government Association, and she volunteered at local food pantries.
Dalelisha now has over 5 years of experience in billing and accounts receivable. Upon graduation, she was able to find employment immediately, thanks in large part to the multiple certifications she earned at Blue Ridge. “The hiring manager explained when offering me the job that having additional certifications set me apart from most of the other applicants,” Dalelisha explained. She is currently employed as a Billing and Accounts Receivable Specialist at a mental Health Facility called Lower Shore Clinic.
“Don’t let anything or anyone stand in your way when it comes to your future. It can be hard but it will be well worth it in the end.”
