Medical Administrative Assistant Class Participates in Field Trip
On May 4, 2022, Medical Administrative Assistant Instructor Laken Shaffer and her class visited Valley Rehab and Nursing to see first hand the types of roles they may be asked to perform if they choose to work in a similar setting.
The first step was learning from the receptionist at the front desk. She showed students how the phone system operated, and how to properly answer and transfer phone calls. They then met with the bookkeeping and billing specialist, who provided an overview of her department.
Finally, the group met with admissions as well as the management team. According to Ms. Shaffer, “all the staff were able to highlight the importance of administrative assistants to a long-term care facility, and they left the feeling with our students that their jobs will be equally as important as clinical staff.
MAA student Tamera Brown explained, “I learned that being administrative is not as easy as it seems, but it can be quite enjoyable if done correctly.” Macy Purvis also enjoyed her experience at Valley, and she stated that it was nice to hear about the importance of administrative staff.
Blue Ridge Job Corps is very appreciative of the hospitality that the staff at Valley Rehab. and Nursing showed to our students. And we are looking forward to visiting again soon.
