Fifteen years ago, the Blue Ridge Job Corps Center started a holiday tradition of adopting families through the Santa Elves program. The program is managed by the Smyth County Department of Social Services and ensures that Santa remembers every child in Smyth County for Christmas. During the month of November, Blue Ridge Job Corp’s Student Government Association (SGA) held various fundraising activities to raise money to purchase items for their adopted families.
“Duct Tape Mr. Levros,” took place on November 9th. Training Director, Juvenel Levros graciously volunteered to be duct taped to a chair by students and staff who paid one dollar per each arm length of the tape. With a grand total of $128 dollars, the activity was a hit. That same day, staff were also given the option to “dress down” for a $3-dollar fee, this garnered an extra $98.05.
The sweet aroma of baked goods filled the air on November 19th and 20th during the two-day “Bake Sale.” Staff utilized their culinary talents and donated cakes, pies, cookies, and other pastries to be sold. Items could be purchased for fifty cents and they netted $117.88, bringing the total for the month to $343.93.
“We are proud to participate in the Santa’s Elves program each year,” said SGA Advisor, Michael Little. “Seeing children open gifts that they otherwise wouldn’t have gotten is what this season is all about.” SGA plans to raise more money in December in hopes that they will be able to bring holiday cheer for up to five children this year.
