“…Job shadow day was everything but yet nothing I expected…I felt like we take a lot for granted and we take our health for granted…” (-Ginah Antonio, EMT student)
“…Job Shadow day was a day to remember for me..I know now the things I will be able to accomplish based on what I am learning now.” (-Dayanna Miranda, EMT student)
On Jan. 30, 2012 the BJCA EMT Academy enjoyed Job Shadow day at Centro Medico, the largest and only Level 1 Trauma Hospital for the island of Puerto Rico. Their tour guide was the Emergency Response Director and a current PR Paramedic. On their tour they were shown the Intensive Care Unit, Trauma Instensive Care Unit, Trauma Emergency room, Hyperbaric Chamber, and the Heliport. During the tour our guide was advised a helicopter was coming in with a trauma victim, and he event took the students up to watch the helicopter land! The students then followed the patient through the process in the Emergency Room. It was a great experience for them, seeing professionals in action and sick/injured patients. They were introduced to the Emergency Response Director (Laison between field EMS and hospital ER), the Trauma Director, and the hospital Medical Director. The students were very excited to have met such professionals, noted in one students job shadow reflection, “…We met the Medical Director and I felt so professional.”(-Jeffrey Rondon, EMT student) Students were surprised by how the day would go for them, returning with feelings of excitement, motivation, and self-realization.
