On December 7th, 2012 BJCA EMT Academy was requested to escort a “Parranda” of children through town and then present Christms gifts to a 17 year old special needs person in our local community. The community sponsored this young woman as she is blind as well as other physical disabilities, however she is able to handmake child wooden horses. As such she made almost 100 wooden horses for the children to ‘ride’ through town and to the community center. The EMT Academy students safely escorted approximately 50 children ranging from 4-10 years old through the streets of Barranquitas, roughly 1 mile of walking, as they danced and sang on our way to the Community Center. Upon arriving at the Center the EMT students sharply marched on stage, stood at attention, and when the time arrived the young woman was presented with a plaque from BJCA and each individual student presented her with gifts and hugs. It was a great way for EMT students to learn what their role is in the community beyond medical emergencies, and it was an honor to present this very talented young woman with well wishes this holiday season.
