American Business Corporation, our partners that assist Job Corps with Recruitment and Transitions Services, (in addition to our own Recruitment and Transitions staff,) assisted with media outreach this week as well! Former Atterbury Job Corps student and now ABC Outreach & Admissions Counselor, Jourdin Shepherd, did a Youth Services focused radio segment on WIBC in Indianapolis. Jourdin spoke on her life, how she enrolled in Job Corps, and her career since graduation. Also present was youth service partners, like JAG, (Jobs for Americas Graduates), Director of Strategic Initiatives, Leslie Crist, from the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. Thanks to Jordan for promoting the program so well, by giving back, and by the successful life she is living! Here is her story:
I went to Job Corps in 2005. I went to high school only for a year and was a drop-out at 16. Didn’t have anything going for my future and was hanging around the wrong crowd of people etc. One of my friends called and told me about all the great things Job Cops offers. I applied and got accepted, and that’s all she wrote!
I went to Atterbury Job Corps in Edinburgh, IN. and obtained my HSD & Career Training. Once you graduate someone is there to take you job searching, Military searching, or college searching. I applied for the Secretary position at the ABC – Job Corps office in downtown Indy. I was a secretary for some years, then went to an Admissions Assistant. I have been an employee of ABC since 2006, and just got my PROMOTION to be an Admissions Counselor last April !! This was my dream! I have worked so hard to get here, and all I wanted to do is help these kids on the streets and help them change their life just like I did. I want them to know it wasn’t hard and that everyone is there to help them, I wasn’t alone anymore out here. I am beyond happy in my life and just want everyone to know that Job Corps can change lives! I am traveling a lot to do presentations at High schools, or any organization that has teens that need Driver’s License, HSD, Career Trade, Leadership classes, Social Skills classes, and the list goes on and on!
