Brick Masonry Instructor Michael Flowers and his IMI Pre-Apprentice students partnered in a community project with the Indiana Future Farmers of America Leadership Center. Since 1968, the Indiana FFA Leadership Center has supported the development of young people and adults through leadership workshops, retreats, youth camps and career development events. Centrally located near Trafalgar, Indiana, the beautiful 170-acre facility includes a 5 acre lake, trails, woods, a creek, a large parade field and a low ropes challenge course. The Leadership Center has grown and changed significantly over the years. In addition to serving FFA member chapters, they’re open to a wide-variety of public and private groups. Our Brick Masons partnered with the center on a bathroom shower renovation project for the FFA’s summer youth camp lodging grounds. The FFA did the demolition and provided materials, we provided the skilled labor to build the shower walls, brick by brick. As you can see, our two Brick Shop foremen, with aide from other classmates, were able to rebuild shower walls for a boys shower room and a girls shower room in a little under two weeks. The Brick students showed a lot of professionalism and pride in their work, under the watchful eye of Instructor Flowers. They learned a lot about Brick masonry through the project, and the Indiana FFA Center was impressed so much that additional projects have already been discussed. It’s a successful partnership built by Hands-On learning!! Thanks to the FFA Leadership Center, Executive Director Joe Parks for the opportunity!
