A COMMUNITY OF COURAGE: FROM ATTERBURY TO ORLANDO

It can be hard to put into words or to understand or to reconcile with the loss of 49 people and 53 more injured. Even though none of our students or staff might have known anyone personally the effect of the events in Orlando have impacted our students just the same.  On Tuesday evening a group of eleven students, many members of the campus LGBTQ+ group, attended a candle light vigil held in Bloomington, IN with over 1,000 participants from the surrounding area. The event was planned by Bloomington Pride and was hosted by the City of Bloomington in front of City Hall, speakers ranged from members of several faiths, business leaders, and community officials.  In the glow of the setting sun and over 1,000 candles the names and ages of each person lost in the Sunday evening attack were read by members of the LGBTQ+ community.  This moment gave our students the chance to reflect and remember those who were lost. Our Atterbury students shone bright throughout the reading, helping people around them keep their candles lit and even offering support to those in the crowd who found themselves crying as the names were read.  While it is a tragic event that brought us to this event,  each student who attended said they were glad they went and had the opportunity to process through the loss.  Thanks to the Atterbury Transportation for making arrangements on such short notice, thanks to the staff who reached out to our students, and for the students who showed courage and love will never be extinguished. -Julie Berger, Career Counselor, LBJ
