Months of planning turned into a hands-on project Thursday as volunteers transformed a corner of Bernalillo’s Loretto Park into an all-ages playground.
The project was a collaboration between PB&J Family Services Therapeutic Pre-School, the town of Bernalillo, Sandoval County, local businesses,  health insurer Humana Inc. and KaBOOM!, a nonprofit dedicated to building playgrounds in communities throughout the country.
Working under the guidance of KaBOOM! project manager Dan Nemiroff and a network of team captains with building experience, volunteers pounded nails, tightened bolts and moved mulch.
“It’s a learning experience,” said volunteer Amber Jaramillo as she watched team leader Ismael Hernandez of Job Corps demonstrate how to use a power drill to drive screws into wood.
The 2,800-square-foot playground is behind the building shared by PB & J and the Bernalillo Senior. It is  designed serve both young children and their parents who receive support services from PB & J and adults who visit the senior center.
“Kids, seniors and parents have all been involved in planning the ideal playground so whole families could be together here,” PB & J development director Dina Ma’ayan said.
Playground equipment like swings and slides are inside a fenced area. Around the perimeter is a series of fitness stations designed for adults.
The playground will also be open to the public
