Alaska Job Corps students have many waterside opportunities in their off-time, after training hours. A full fleet of canoes, nicely berthed in a “canoe dorm”, stand ready for the evening lake paddle. Swimming in lakes is common and fishing too is an abundant activity in the long summer hours. Water Safety is therefore high priority for students and staff alike.
Last week was Alaska Water Safety Day, celebrated by Alaskans wearing their safety life vests to work and school. Job Corps was ready and participated in this important moment. And its not just for show. At every outing, safety is reviewed before trips and a safety check is conducted. In the case of any waterside outing, life vests are a requirement. And students must be swimmer certified, which is a standard part of their early orientation in the program. Students learn to make water safety part of their life and culture.
