Sable Wolf, Alaska Job Corps Y2Y student writes: Today, May 4th, our Y2Y group met with Tyler Roberts (Legislative Assistant to Alaska’s U. S. Senator Dan Sullivan) in the career development center. The Y2Y students included Mr. Roberts in a discussion on Y2Y advancements, which have positively impacted the culture on center. They also discussed the efforts our centers Y2Y program has made in progression to totally eliminate violence on center
This meeting was attended by 18 solid Y2Y members, student government and staff representatives. Our students shared and expressed personal experiences on the subject, along with ideas to help better the lives of our community. They had an opportunity to speak up for our center as well as practice anti bullying scenarios. We hope to advance further and spread our program deeper in to the Job Corps diversity.
Perhaps the most interesting development of Alaska’s Y2Y program is the inward retrospection that is taking place. Students are examining themselves for individual acts, which combat bullying. Weekly the group discusses the culture and openly discusses any incidents or needs. Weekly there is an inspirational story offered regarding others who have stood up against bullying.
The Senator’s staffer spoke in admiration of the group and the goals. Mr. Roberts said that any employer would be proud to have these students on their team, because of their passion for Y2Y goals. Having this attitude, in addition to having the skills and training, is a winning ticket.
