The gym was packed as the Alaska Job Corps Center Student Government Association held a mock SGA meeting on Friday, March 3, to demonstrate the purpose and process of the association. The SGA members introduced themselves and their roles within the group to the entire student body.
During the mock meeting, the SGA invited ideas from the audience and recorded them for their next meeting. Some of the ideas were to hold a St. Patrick’s Day folk dance, to offer swimming lessons, skiing activities and more.
The SGA offered multiple proposals, which were often met with cheers from the student body. The SGA had to counter some of these proposals to show the rules governing the association.
Some of the proposals included using SGA funds to replace the washers and dryers in the dormitories, which was met with general applause, while they also proposed adding fermented tofu to the cafeteria menu, which brought both laughs and boos from the audience.
The ultimate proposal that was accepted was to provide the entire student body with ice cream after the mock meeting, which was received with loud applause.
The students then formed two lines to get their ice cream with toppings while Job Corps staff served them. After getting their ice cream, the students returned to their seats and enjoyed their ice cream while socializing with their fellow students.
