Two weeks ago, Megan Dauphinee participated in the National Job Corps Oratory Competition. Her speech focused on the dramatic changes in her life, thanks to Job Corps’ assistance and training. After the speech she traveled up to Capital Hill to meet with Senator Begich and his staff.
The Senator asked Megan and Center Director, Malyn Smith to be a part of a filmed and televised taping which will be aired in March. This media will be televised across the state. Megan and Malyn discussed how many students struggle but eventually (and with much Job Corps support) become successful.
Senator Mark Begich has visited Alaska Job Corps many times. He know the value of the program because it involves the whole community. Between public service and training, the Job Corps program touches many people, besides just the students. It is a safe and friendly environment with just the correct amount of structure so young people can excell.
Megan had a difficult childhood, losing her mother at age 14. Megan had the tenacity to move out of a troubled life and into the supportive career path at the Alaska Job Corps. Although she only had a grade school education, she is now both a high school graduate and a college student. She is certified in Human Services and seeks a degree. There is no doubt that Megan will be successful. She is grateful for Senator Begich’s attention and support of the Job Corps program.
