When the National Football stars came to Wasilla, Alaska last week, Alaska Job Corps Y2Y students stood up to help. It was an huge community event for younger kids and Alaska Job Corps students helped with the obstacle course, group organization, and taught Native Youth Olympics and simple Native Alaska Dance moves. It was a sweet moment when the offensive star player started waving his hands to the traditional Native drumming and singing. Everyone enjoyed it but it wasn’t all fun. Students were “out of their comfort zone,” and expected to do well in front of a large audience. Teamwork, one of the tenants of the Y2Y group, became the goal in addition to offering advice and assistance to the youngsters. Anti-bullying and anti-violence is the reason for the Y2Y P4P organization and standing shoulder to shoulder with the children and the sports stars was a empowering time.
