Monday Mountain Runs helps Job Corps endurance

After a long day of training, some want to nap.  Or eat.  Or chill.

But the Alaska Job Corps Monday Running Club has mountains to climb.  And they love it.

They have run up the Lazy Moose Trail and in Hatcher Pass.  They will run the Butte and Morgan Horse Trail.  There are plenty of mountains surrounding the Alaska Job Corps so the club has plenty of choices.

Sometimes they join the strollers and dogs and elders in a community run.  Jane Baldwin, Evening Studies Coordinator, believes running is both good for the brain and good for the soul, in addition to excellent physical conditioning.  Valuable skills like dedication and perseverance are built through running.

Safety is a huge issue for the club, which includes far more than footwear.  Mountain running requires backcountry precautions like whistles, extra water, extra clothing, bear and moose avoidance and common sense preparations.  And running as a group involves teamwork which is yet another employability skill, learned after training hours are done.
