Leveling the Playing Field with Job Corps High School diplomas

The Alaska Job Corps program is proud to announce that 29 students have received their GED or high school diploma in the last few months. This is perhaps a understated phenomena of the Job Corps program. Many people assume–incorrectly– that young people have a GED or diploma, especially if they are articulate and mature. But statistics disprove that assumption. And without that critical diploma or certificate, significant obstacles prohibit employment opportunities.

Students who start in a Job Corps program are brought “up to speed” academically and the gaps in their previous education attempts are identified and filled. Not only does this give them an important certification, but it gives these students the pride and esteem that goes with their new path to success. Acquiring a GED or Diploma puts these students on the same level playing field and allows them to consider so many more opportunities.

Chris Ruge is the GED and high school instructor at the Alaska Job Corps program. “I like watching them overcome that hump,” he says. “It is really an aha!! moment when my students get it.” Chris is a charismatic and devoted teacher and his students thrive and appreciate his concern. Chris goes on to explain that the joy of learning is a precious part of the joy of teaching.
