It was the municipal election last evening. At city hall in downtown Anchorage things were predictably chaotic–but that is just the way it is on election evenings. Precinct volunteers and workers deliver the secure hard ballot boxes, in their SUV’s and cartons of voter materials are shifted rapidly in an organized fashion. From a distance, it is well practiced choreography, but up front it is hectic and busy. However, calmly adding to the sense of order was a line-up of eleven Alaska Job Corps Protective Services students. They offered a nice and stable welcome to the assisted weary ballot attendants, as they arrived in the City Hall parking lot. Television cameras and reporters recorded the events while throngs of onlookers documented the process on their smart phones.
Integrity and safety is first and foremost on the Municipality’s election agenda. Likewise the Protective Services students worked hard to enhance both areas. Mayor Ethan Berkowitz thanked the Job Corps students for their assistance. Many workers and volunteers commented on the students’ expert workplace conduct, presence and strong customer service skills.
A solid work ethic was shown by Emery Alick, Brandon Arrow, Travis Chunak, William ‘Donny’ Cook, Michael Hendrickson, George Kameroff, Devan Kincaid, Lucy Mark, Brian Perry, Francine Teve, and Sable Wolf. In addition to the Protective Services students, Devin Kincaid, from the Building Construction Technology program assisted with equal professionalism.
Alaska Job Corps Work Base Specialist Luanne Cross was proud of their performance. “Job Corps security students were professional, in addition to being continually courteous and helpful. I would want them on my team.” The Municipality of Anchorage Elections officials agrees with her and plans to reward and recognize this group for their service. Plus the students are already booked in advance for the next several elections.
