It was about two months ago when Megan Dauphinee reluctantly decided to enter the Alaska Job Corps Center Oratory Competition. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to do it; the problem was she was so busy. She was finishing her high school diploma; she was doing work base training; she was caring for her two children. Megan worked late at night on her speech. When she delivered it, the audience was astounded.
Her speech was entered into the National Contest and she was selected as a national finalist. But she was still busy: she had started college; she was working; her children still needed her; and she was stranded by an avalanche. Megan worked again, late at night, perfecting her presentation.
Two weeks ago Megan won the National Competition. She met with Senators and Representatives. She met Edna Primrose, Director of Job Corps. She was able to visit the West Wing. She was filmed and interviewed. At last count, her story has gone viral with hundreds of ‘shares’ and tweets and reprints.
Megan has remained humble. And busy. But not so busy that she isn’t out sharing her message of Job Corps inspiration with others. She worked this morning and then went to classes. This afternoon is a presentation at an alternative high school, where she hopes to help other young people struggling in their success. And tonight she has to make dinner and bathe the children. And she will stay up late, preparing for her college class tomorrow. But as she says, “Job Corps works and it worked for me too.” Spread the word.
