Sierra Nevada Job Corps Celebrates Successful Job Shadow Day
Sierra Nevada Job Corps Center (SNJCC) held its annual Job Shadow Day on February 9. This year, SNJCC’s event was held in partnership with the Washoe County Ready for Life Job Shadow Day. The county-wide effort was arranged to expose youth to career paths and employers they may not have considered. Job shadowing helped open students’ minds to the career possibilities and industries available in the area and get them actively engaged with those possibilities.
SNJCC participated in the event with other local service providers, including Truckee Meadows Boys & Girls Club, Washoe County School District, Washoe County Social Services, Community Services Agency, Silver Stage High School and Fernley High School. While youth benefitted from the day, employers also had a chance to showcase their businesses and talk about their industries. Some employers held hands on training with one or two students. Others engaged students by giving them a tour of the facility and showing student what it is like to work for their company.
Seventy SNJCC students shadowed at 15 different area businesses, in industries such as automotive, hospitality, solar energy, energy efficiency, finance and insurance. The event was extremely successful and the center looks forward to continuing to build positive relationships between education and industry!
