The Career Transition Department was excited to host the March Awards Assembly at the Joliet Job Corps Center. Coming right out of Black History Month, the March awards assembly focused on “Celebrating History as We Know It.”
The Awards Assembly began with a warm welcome from Career Transition Manger Candace Brown and a bit of history about the integration of schools following the 1954 Supreme Court ruling of Brown v. Board of Education. Many students were surprised to learn that the decision to create an equal school system was made during the lifetime of their parents and grandparents.
This year the Career Transition Department did things a bit differently. Not only was the Awards Assembly hosted by students and staff, but the awards and historical moments were presented via a PowerPoint. The Career Transition Department then recognized the many accomplishments of our Job Corps students. Awards were given for all areas of the program, including CSSR Standards, CPP, Academics, Trade, WBL, CTR and Social Development.
Students were eager to participate in the various readings and presentation of awards.
Who was the first African-American U.S. Supreme Court Justice? Who was the first African-American Olympian? How many African-Americans have served in the United States Senate? These are a few of the trivia questions that were asked of students during the Awards Assembly. It was a pleasure to see students eager and excited to learn more about American history.
The Awards Assembly concluded with recognition of Trade of the Month, which went to Security/MILCAP, and Dorm of the Month, which went to Rosa Parks.
