Carl D. Perkins Job Corps Student Success Story: Brittany Brown

Twenty-one-year old Brittany Brown, originally from Dublin, Georgia and now a student at Carl D. Perkins Job Corps in Prestonsburg, has yet to complete her training at the center but can already boast of achievements.

Since April, Brown has worked with the Floyd County Conservation District and only recently completed her 12 weeks with that program. During her time there, she worked in numerous capacities ranging from office administration duties to assisting with environmental education presentations.

And her hard work and character did not go unnoticed or unappreciated.

“I know they still want me to work for them, but I can’t,” Brown said, smiling. “I’ve finished my 12 weeks.”

In a letter written shortly after Brown finished her work with the conservation district in late June, Tony Grubb, Floyd County’s district office manager of the program, said he and the others at the district could imagine the 21-year-old, who now lives in Florida, at any position she might decide to pursue.

“Ms. Brown was a valuable asset while being assigned to our office,” Grubb said. “We feel that she would be a great addition to any company or field she decides to pursue in her life.”

Such praise came not only through this letter in late June, but also while Brown was working with Grubb and the others at the Floyd County Conservation District. Just before leaving, Brown was awarded a certificate of appreciation from those she had worked with since April.

But another highlight came during one of the statewide board meetings, Brown said.

“During the meeting, they introduced me and said what a good job I had been doing,” Brown said. “It surprised me because I was just sitting there typing away and then they asked me to stand up and introduced me. It was nice.”

Though Brown is currently training in Hotel Lodging at Perkins Job Corps, she says her key career goal would be to study criminal justice and eventually work in that field.

“For me this is just a starting point,” said Brown, who expects to finish her training in September.
